Dermal Fillers
Youthful faces have rounded features, natural fullness and tight, smooth skin. Our supporting structure changes as we age. Our bones resorb and fat moves and deflates over time leading to loss of volume and definition and gain of lines and wrinkles. Patients think they look saggy, hollowed or tired as this happens. Dermal fillers can contour and balance the face, adding volume to the lips, augmenting the cheeks, and smoothing out lines & wrinkles. They are excellent solutions to these common signs of facial aging. Dr. Adams uses fillers such as the Restylane® and RHA® Collections. These fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule which already exists in the human body. The gel is injected at varying levels below the surface of the skin in tiny amounts using a very fine needle or cannula. The hyaluronic-based gel adds natural volume and lift, which smooths and diminishes wrinkles and folds. Treatments typically take 30-45 minutes to perform. Results are immediately visible and can last up to one year. Factors such as patient’s age and skin type will affect how long the filler treatment results are sustained. Neuromodulators
Injectable neuromodulators safely relax overactive muscles that create wrinkles, allowing for smoother skin with less lines. This treatment works for forehead lines, “11 lines” between the eyebrows, crows’ feet, “bunny lines” of the nose and a gummy smile, among others. Neuromodulators can be used preventatively in small doses to help prevent lines from forming as well. Let Dr. Adams make you look refreshed!
Platelet-Rich Plasma
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) a 100% natural treatment, and is often called “liquid” gold. It is plasma from your own blood that is full of platelets and growth factors. PRP can be microneedled into the skin to improve skin texture, pores, fine lines and scars through its collagen remodeling ability.
Customized Chemical Peels
Chemical peeling is a process by which a chemical solution is applied to the surface of the skin. The top cell layers are then sloughed and replaced with brighter and smoother skin. Midlothian Dermatology offers a wide variety of peels. All of our peels are medical-grade and performed by our registered nurse, Lisa. Based on the concern - be it acne, discoloration, or improving skin tone and texture - we customize chemical peel ingredients to safely optimize results while fitting within the recovery time that your life allows.

Bela MD
BELA MD Facials combines medical-grade dermabrasion, deep cleansing, and serum infusion with muscle stimulation, antioxidant action, and electroporation to elevate the treatment experience and results. In addition to improving overall skin quality, this comprehensive system treats and protects against common skin concerns such as skin aging, dehydration, acne, and photodamage, with customizable treatment options and targeted serum solutions.

Microdermabrasion
In microdermabrasion, abrasives are used on the skin to buff away surface imperfections. This leaves the skin supple and vibrant. At Midlothian Dermatology, we use the DiamondTome™ Skin Resurfacing System. Unlike the older systems, the DiamondTome™ Skin Resurfacing System uses no loose abrasives to contaminate you or the environment. Microdermabrasion can correct sun damage, minimize fine to moderate wrinkles, flatten shallow scars, lighten sun freckles and blotchy pigmentation, and improve overall color and texture. You will experience softer, smoother and cleaner skin after the first treatment. The number of treatment sessions varies depending on the condition being treated and skin type. Microneedling
Microneedling aka collagen induction therapy is a minimally-invasive treatment that is safe in all skin types. Microneedling creates controlled microscopic columns of injury to the skin that triggers a healing response, leading to production of collagen and elastin. It has been shown to effectively reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve discoloration while tightening the skin. It can also help improve the appearance of pores, scars, and stretch marks. Treatment packages are recommended for best results!
Laser & Intense Pulsed Light
At Midlothian Dermatology, we use the Palomar Medilux® and Cutera XEO Intense Pulsed Light Systems. Both systems work by emitting pulses of light energy into the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment in sunspots and the blood in visible vessels. These imperfections are removed and skin texture is improved. Treatment time varies from 30 minutes to one hour, during which time a series of light pulses will be applied to the skin. The treatment may give a sensation of a rubber band snap that only lasts for a brief second. A cold roller is applied to the skin during treatment to make the treatment more comfortable. After your first treatment, the skin will feel smoother, firmer and will have a more even tone. These improvements are gradual and will become more visible after each treatment. The skin may feel like you have a mild sunburn and appear pink/red for a couple of hours after treatment. Make-up may be applied and normal activities resumed within a couple of hours after treatment.
Laser Hair Removal
The founder of Midlothian Dermatology, Dr. Bohannon-Grant, pioneered laser hair removal in Richmond in 1995. We have three different technologies and can choose the best one for you. Our Cutera Coolglide/Excel hair removal laser is most advanced and can treat darker skin tones safely and effectively. We also have the Palomar Medilux® and Cutera Prowave systems which can treat large areas quickly. All technologies use light to kill the root of the hairs. The melanin in the hairs absorb the light from the machines, the light energy turns to heat energy and the heat kills the root of the hairs. This means that gradually there is a permanent reduction in the amount of hair in that area. The treatments may give a sensation of a light pinch. It only lasts for a brief second. A cold roller is applied to the skin before and after each pulse to make the treatment comfortable and safe. Treatments are usually performed every 4-6 weeks, typically for a total of 5-7 treatments. After treatment, some patients may experience short-term pinkness and a mild sunburn sensation of the surrounding skin. Treatments require no patient downtime. You may return to normal activities immediately after the treatment.
Photodynamic Therapy
Our office offers photodynamic Blu-U (www.dusapharma.com) therapy for the treatment of actinic keratoses (precancerous skin lesions), acne vulgaris, and photodamage. Performed in our office, the procedure is a blue light-based treatment which involves the application of a light-sensitizing chemical, followed by an incubation period and subsequent Blu-U light treatment. For many acne patients, the Blu-U light treatment alone may provide improvement.
Benign Lesion Removal
Benign skin lesions can include skin tags, cherry angiomas, sun-spots, sebaceous hyperplasias (enlarged oil glands), dermatosis papulosa nigra (small brown facial bumps), and benign keratoses (skin barnacles). Everyone has these annoying growths! They are removed by freezing, cutting, lasering or burning. If you have a benign growth that you would like removed, please make an appointment with our Physician Assistant, Stacy Romero. She will diagnose your ‘spot’ and then discuss with you the most efficient means of removal or treatment. Please note that benign skin lesion removal is typically not covered by insurance.
Milia & Acne Surgery
This is the removal of tiny white cysts and blackheads. Each lesion is pricked open with a needle and gently extracted. A specific technique is used to minimize skin trauma. Your lesions may feel tender and be inflamed for a couple of hours after treatment.
Piercings
Midlothian Dermatology offers a clean and safe medical environment for ear piercings, belly button piercings, and earlobe repair. This service is offered to patients who are 13 years and older. A parent or guardian must accompany any patient under the age of 18 to the visit. We use anesthesia for all piercings. The patient may feel a bit of pressure during treatment. Detailed written after-care instructions are reviewed with and given to each patient. Following these instructions will optimize healing and recovery of the new piercing.

Cosmeceuticals are products that contain true scientifically proven anti-aging ingredients. These are the real ‘fountain of youth’ potions! We carry a Midlothian Dermatology line of comprehensive, potent and advanced cosmeceuticals as well as select products from other brands in which we believe. We review all products yearly and search for effective products that produce results but with cost in mind!
